An engaging and interactive reading activity, “The Library of Sounds,” was conducted by Mrs. Sharon Damani on Wednesday, 16th September 2026, at the Junior Section Library of Birla High School for the students of the Little Scholars’ Club. The activity introduced the boys to the concept of onomatopoeia through sound, storytelling and exploration of library books.
The hour-long session began with an introduction to onomatopoeia, helping the boys understand how certain words imitate or suggest the sounds they describe. They explored storybooks in the library and searched for examples of sound words used by authors. The boys listened to, identified and shared different sound words found in their chosen stories, making the reading experience lively and enjoyable.
The activity then encouraged the boys to use the sound words creatively in their own mini-stories. Through this exercise, they discovered how writers use sounds to make stories more vivid, expressive and interesting. The activity also promoted reading skills, vocabulary development, imagination, creativity and oral expression.
By the end of the session, the boys were able to understand the meaning of onomatopoeia, recognise sound words while reading, identify examples in storybooks and use them creatively in their own writing. The session also helped them appreciate how sound words can bring characters, actions and events to life, making storytelling a more engaging experience.
